Mobilizing Onsite at National Special Security Events
CSS operates and maintains EPA mobile analytical units that travel to support multi-agency security efforts during high profile events that draw large crowds.

Standing Ready to Protect the Health and Safety of Attendees at Large Public Gatherings
CSS operates and maintains EPA mobile analytical units that travel to support multi-agency security efforts during highly profile events that draw large crowds. These gatherings have included a visit from the Pope, and national political conventions. While onsite during the events our staff operate in “hot standby mode”, ready to receive samples 24 hours a day in the event of a possible chemical release. For example, police officers working at a National Republican Convention felt ill after protesters placed stickers on the officer’s skin. The FBI asked EPA to analyze the stickers for chemical warfare agents and drugs. Our chemists delivered results within hours that showed the stickers did not contain hazardous compounds. The Secret Service Agent-in-Charge and the FBI Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Coordinator complimented EPA’s ability to provide rapid analysis of the stickers.
